Heed The Warnings: They’re Not Kidding
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
There are several warnings listed in the product description of this helmet detailing how dangerous football can be. I only wish I had heeded the warnings.
A bunch of my buddies and I decided to turn our rough-touch football games in my backyard into tackle games, so we all had to buy helmets because we play pretty rough. Even in touch games, teeth and fingernails have been lost. So I bought this helmet and it fit snugly at first. But then during the game I took a vicious hit. I caught a pass just before Mondo McPounder laid into me. Rang my chimes good. I was even hearing birds tweeting like in the cartoons.
The hit must have caused my head to swell, because I couldn’t get the helmet off after that (probably shouldn’t have gotten a “Jr.” size noggin bucket). I had to wait for the swelling to go down for two days. It didn’t hurt too much, but at work especially it was really embarrassing. It might not have been so bad if I worked at the DMV or an oil change center or something, but imagine being a school bus driver wearing a football helmet to work. Not good.
I also found out during those two days that there aren’t many social situations amenable to someone with a football helmet stuck on his head, certainly not the elegant awards dinner my wife and I attended the one night. To make matters worse, the color of my tuxedo didn’t even match the helmet. Besides the snickers and people immediately looking away when I looked at them, it took me hours to go through the mashed potatoes with the face guard. Some people asked my wife if I had problems, so I didn’t complain when she told them I had mother issues just so we could get through the night. Intimate relations were troublesome too.
Mondo is a gentle giant and he apologized (while my helmet was still on) but I told him not to worry about it. The hit was hard but clean. And that’s why you should be wary playing football even if you have a quality helmet.
